A new breed of garden designer is reclaiming London’s neglected rooftops, and transforming them into green spaces in the sky, says John Rice of Urbanroofgardens.
Reclaiming London’s rooftops
To coincide with the 2004 Chelsea Flower Show, the BBC aired a special programme, hosted by Diarmuid Gavin, highlighting the new movement by urban dwellers to reclaim London’s rooftops. Following John Rice, a director of Urbanroofgardens, as he roller-blades through London’s streets, the program explores the benefits of roof gardens, looks at one London couple’s dreary flat roof extension transformed into an oasis of lawn and planting by the Urbanroofgardens team, and visits the revolutionary BedZed development.
