Gardening on the rooftops
Rooftop gardening goes under cover at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show with four designs in the City Gardens category sited within the Great Pavilion.
An artist’s impression shows the urban, minimalist design by Jennifer Hirsch. Entitled Up On The Roof, it uses hedges of yew decorated with fibreoptic lights along with clipped balls of box and hebe to represent the managed landscape. Cannomois (Cape reed) and Echium reflect the chaos of more natural plantings.
Other roof gardens in the Great Pavilion are Heavenly Gardens with a pond, sculpture and planting restricted to four containers; Nature in the Sky which uses plants able to grow in a thin layer of soil; and Picture This, a modern-style garden.
